PROTECTION FOR MUSICIANS (article first published : 2002-03-7)

The latest PANSA (Performing Arts Network of South Africa) newsletter has good news for those in the music industry – “the Performers’ Protection Amendment Bill and the Copyright Amendment Bill were passed in the National Assembly in late February.

“These acts, – introduced by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) – provide for mechanisms to collectively bargain with broadcasters in the collection and payment of royalties, particularly “pay for play time” royalties i.e. every time a record or CD is played, royalties should accrue to the copyright owner of the work. For more information, visit the site www.gov.za”
