ODEION STRING QUARTET (article first published : 2002-03-3)

Friends of Music will present a recital on March 12 by the Odeion String Quartet (the only full-time professional string quartet in South Africa).

The Odeion String Quartet was founded in August 1991 as the permanent, full-time resident quartet of the University of the Orange Free State. It gave its debut concert in the Odeion auditorium, its home on the university campus, on September 13 of that year. In establishing this quartet, the UOVS followed the example of overseas universities where it is an established tradition to house professional quartets. At the moment the Odeion String Quartet is the only university quartet in Southern Africa, other string quartets largely functioning on an ad hoc basis.

The establishment of the Resident String Quartet demonstrates the Free State University Boardís special dedication to the development of serious music. Apart from countrywide concerts in cities as well as numerous towns, the quartet has taken part in music festivals in Norway, Zimbabwe and Botswana and has developed an extensive repertoire that they adapt for a variety of events. In addition to the formal concerts, the Quartet has a popular school music programme, and they performed to more than 10 000 children in 2000.

The Odeion String Quartet will perform works by Mozart, Beethoven, Mendolssohn, Prokofiev, Antonin and Dvorak.

The Prelude Performer for the evening, thanks to funding from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, will be 16 year-old pianist Keshree Pillay who appeared in the Rising Stars programme in December.

For Friends of Musicís recital the Odeion String Quartet will play Mozartís String Quartet in D Major K575; Beethovenís String Quartet No. 3 in D Major op 18, and Mendelssohn Quartet No. 3 in A flat major op 44.

The recital takes place at the Durban Jewish Club on March 12 at 19h45. Book at Computicket. The venue has a cash bar and there is safe parking.
