BOO! & BENGUELA (article first published : 2002-02-22)

On Friday (February 22) the Greyville nightspot barGO will host album launches from Benguela and BOO with DJ Manoj filling in the gaps.

First up will be Cape Town based Benguela returning to Durban for the first time in over a year. The three-piece instrumental group are on the road with their Jesus takes the cake tour, launching their latest release Digital Inability. Benguela is made up of Ross Campbell (drums), Alex Bozas (guitar) and Brydon Bolton (double bass).

The name "Benguela" was taken from the cold current running up the west coast of Southern Africa (it's also apparently the name Angolan's gave to the stick they used in war which had a great big knob on one end) and reflects the climate in which this experimental band was conceived.

Closing off the evening will be BOO! who are on a breakneck tour of the homeland, launching their latest release Shooting Star. This album is a compilation of tracks produced by the band of studio, live tracks and re-mixes recorded around the world in 2001. The album was launched at Europe's most prestigious venue The Paradiso in Amsterdam on January 24th. The band played to a capacity audience of people travelling from as far afield as USA, The Czech Republic, SA, UK and Belgium. After appearing and playing live on National Dutch Radio, 3FM, they have been playing sold out shows across Europe.

Doors open at 20h00 and tickets R30 at the door. More details from Neil Comfort on 031 309-6066 or 083 463-8044.

Performing on Saturday (February 23) will be Kung Funk. Doors open at 21h00, tickets R30 at the door. Same contact numbers apply.
