STANDARD BANK SAMA 8 (article first published : 2002-02-20)

Standard Bank South African Music Awards, South Africa's colourful equivalent of the American Grammy's.

To be staged at Sun City on April 13, the Standard Bank SAMA 8 promises to continue the rich tradition of an entertaining and exciting evening spent with the “who's who” of the music industry and the glitterati of the South African music and social scene.

With a record number of entries this year and the industry already speculating about the category winners, the event pays tribute to individual musical arts excellence and highlights the collective excellence of the South African music industry. Contributing to the unification of all music industry participants and the entrenchment of the aims and ideals of the industry as a whole, the awards are sponsored by Standard Bank and organised and co-ordinated in association with RISA.

Says chairman of RISA, Lesley Sedibe of EMI: "The Standard Bank SAMA creates a strong focal point for the aims of RISA and underlines the importance of developing local music and establishing it as a unique competitor on the international stage, creating and maintaining a framework for the long-term employment of thousands of musicians, and fighting the battle against piracy to protect the rights and livelihood of South Africa's performers."

Mandie Van Der Spuy, Arts Sponsorship Manager of Standard Bank, comments: "It is a privilege to be associated with one of the most high-profile dates on the local music calendar. Furthermore, we are grateful for the opportunity to strengthen our longstanding support of the music in South Africa and our commitment to the development of local musicians."
