DURBAN ARTS CONCERT (article first published : 2002-01-1)

Every Wednesday, Durban Arts Association presents a free lunch-hour concert on the City Hall Steps from 12h45 to 14h00. The concert on January 2 features Natasha Joubert and City Sound Brothers. The programme is assisted by the Royal Netherlands Embassy.

The Curtain Raiser slot at 12h45 will be filled by Natasha Joubert who sings R&B with her cousins Rona Ogle and Shabida Scott. All from Wentworth, they have been together for more than six years and started singing when they were still in high school. They have performed at the BAT Centre as well in clubs in Durban. They appeared on stage with the famous TRO at Da Flava club in Johannesburg and in 1996 won Best R & B group at the Obsession Club.

Main artists are City Sound Brothers, a gospel group specialising in umxhoba’nyawo which was founded by its leader Maurice Mthembu in 1995. The nine member group also includes Johannes Nzuza (bass), Bheki Khalala (keyboard), Bhekani Mkhize, Sandile Luthuli, Mzokhona Msomi, Sandile Mchunu and Mandla Lukhozi (Drums). They recorded their first album Kungenxa KaAdam in 1996 and have been awarded a gold disc for selling more than 20,000 copies. The award-winning group have made a name for themselves by playing in festivals and large venues such as the Amphitheatre in Johannesburg.
