PEDXULU (article first published : 2001-12-29)

A classic concert presented in association with Castle Milk Stout comes to the Rainbow Restaurant and Jazz Club on December 30.

This will be the first live appearance PedXulu, an exciting collaboration which features the legendary Mabi Thobejane on African drums, congas and percussion; Madala Kunene on guitar and vocals; Bernard Mndaweni on bass guitar; Tabang Tabane on percussion, Malombo drums, marimba and congas; and Zulu Lesefa on a one-string tin can guitar.

Mabi and Madala are journeyman musicians: Mabi's career stretches as far back as 1952 and he has travelled the world captivating audiences with his music. Madala Kunene is also well-known locally and overseas, Madala is fondly known as the King of the Zulu guitar. A long-term friendship between Mabi and Madala brought this collaboration to life.

The concept name PedXulu was given for the combining of different music styles of the group. With Mabi and Tabang Tabane hailing from the north using Pedi rhythms and musical influences combined with the intoxicating Zulu rhythms from Madala Kunene and Bernard Mndaweni from KZN, the montage is complete with Zulu Lesefa from Lesotho also Pedi speaking.

The project was developed under the assistance of Robert Trunz of Melt2000 fame which is the record company to which Mabi and Madala are assigned.

Doors open at 12h00 and tickets R25 at the door.

The group will also appear at the Flux Festival near Mooi River on December 31. More details from Andrew Loubser on 082 338-1604.
