EIGHT STYLES (article first published : 2001-12-24)

One of this season's Publisher's Choice - Eight Styles by Karen Roos with photography by Massimo Cecconi will help you understand the choices you make in creating your personal style.

The introduction states that style is inherent and personal. Whether you are a romantic, urbanite, colourist, traditionalist, purist, bohemian, collector or a free spirit - this book explores each of these themes and defines the personality adhering to them.

Author Karen Roos developed her sense of style as a fashion stylist at Glamour in New York, at Cosmopolitan and as a founder editor of Red magazine in South Africa. She studied fine arts in Amsterdam and in Cape Town.

Massimo Cecconi is a photographer whose work has appeared in numerous magazines, as well as in decor books. His photographs are precise, with very clean – almost clinical - lines but full of detail.

This is not a book to be judged on first impressions and initially it looks somewhat boring and academic. On investigation however, it becomes evident that it can be considered a real treasure trove.

The text and photographs are well balanced, clearly compiled by a professional with insight and understanding of the subject matter. Eight very different styles are intricately explored, not merely the outward manifestation but also their innermost motivation. Tips are not only offered on the “how” of decorating, but also on the “why”. The comments by the psychologist are both intriguing and enlightening as the personality type is clearly reflected in the style chosen. Advice is also offered on how to keep styles pure and avoid common pitfalls.

People are composite and style leaders worldwide poach from others and blend the influences they harvest. Recognition of what you are is the first step. Harsh selection is the next - the growth of your personal style develops.

The text of this book is integral to the photographs, as are the comments of the psychologist. Various well known South Africans are categorised in the appropriate sections and give insights to their own desires such as Cathy O'Clery, the editor of Elle Decor South Africa and fashion designer Marianne Fassler whose statement probably sums up this book aptly: “I will never judge you by your cover, and I expect the same of you.”

Eight Styles is published by Struik and the selling price is R143. - Cherry MacIldowie and Gaby Sinton
