SA CAROLS CD (article first published : 2001-12-17)

The CD of South African Christmas Carols has just been released and, according to local music personality Leonie Pauw, it is the first of its kind produced in South Africa.

Many years ago, Leonie’s mother, Jo Ross, was asked to organise an International Christmas Carol morning at the Pretoria Women’s Club where the diplomats of each country were asked to sing their own carols. She discovered that there were none for South Africa. She approached well-known South African composers to submit their compositions and the response provided enough material for two books to be printed. Leonie translated most of the carols into either English of Afrikaans in order for them to be sung in both languages, on this CD performed by top South African choirs and soloists.

One song, Inkosi Jesu, sung by Mimi Coertse was composed by Durbanite Edith Hugo Bosman and is also translated into Zulu. The Drakensberg Choir sings a song with an African rhythm by Susan Cock (wife of conductor Richard). The multiracial Libertas Choir from Stellenbosch ends the CD of 38 songs with a magnificent carol written by John Joubert, now living in London Come Colours Rise

The CD is obtainable from shops (eg Musica) at R90.
