MEGAN KAHTS (article first published : 2001-11-20)

Megan Kahts, a 12 year-old grade seven pupil at the Glenashley Senior Primary School took a seen-it-all audience of journalists by storm last week when she made a guest appearance at the Ingababa Awards.

Portraying the maturity of a singer three times her age, she impressed with her versatile vocal ability and astounded one and all with her controlled and powerful voice, demeanour and phrasing ability.

Meganís talent was spotted when she was in grade three and she now studies with former opera singer Francois Vermeulen who is based in Durban North. Her growth and ability to master complicated music continues to astound both teacher and parents.

When she appeared in the competition Reach for the Stars, singer and radio announcer Phillip Kotze heard her sing and realised her strong potential. Through his influence, Select Music closed a four year contract with Megan and the company recently released My Motherís Arms. This is the first of three albums to be produced in the next few years.

My Motherís Arms includes numbers such as Pie Jesu and a selection from The Sound of Music. Also featured are technically challenging classical numbers like Una voce poco fa, Alleluia and The Laughing Song. Other songs are Die Heidelied, the jazz number Glory of Love and the ballad White Rose of Athens.

For Megan, who also takes piano and Italian lessons, classical music is a passion and she dreams of going to Italy and Vienna to study music. However, she is still child enough of today to enjoy boy bands like Westlife and Boyzone.

In September she played the leading role of Maria in her schoolís production of The Sound of Music and will take music as a subject from next year in high school.
