AFRICA2AFRICA HIGHLIGHTS (article first published : 2001-11-18)

Africa Talks on the DStv channel Africa2Africa on November 19 at 19h30 looks at xenophobia, a word originating from the Greek language meaning a strong dislike or distrust of foreigners. The phenomenon came to light in the late 1990s when The Foreigner, a South African-made film by Zola Maseko, played to acclaim in cinemas around the world.

Three leading entertainment personalities talk to Bob Mabena about their experiences as strangers in South Africa.

Nigerian actor/director Akim Omotso uses his film God is African as a starting point. Another Nigerian, TV actor and presenter Hakeem kae-Kazim who has a starring role in the film, also talks about living in South Africa. Zimbabwean Caz Abrahams, who has made a name for himself as a model and TV presenter then discusses his experiences.

Tributes and Profiles on November 22 at 18h30 pays homage to jazz musician Ratau Mike Makhalemele who has been playing professionally since the late 1960s. He is famous for his own brand of marabi jazz, the fusion of US jazz and traditional South African music first heard in Johannesburg shebeens in the 1920s and 1930s.

Makhalemele has been hailed as South Africa's finest saxophonist. He has backed Champion Jack du Preez, Joe Henderson, Curtis Mayfield and Clarence Carter and worked with Paul Simon on his Graceland project. Hit albums include Thabang which featured Meadowlands, Freedom Dance, Emakhaya and Amabutho.
