THULAS AND ITHEMBA (article first published : 2001-11-12)

Kwaito and gospel make up the programme for tomorrow’s (November 14) free lunch hour concert presented by Durban Arts on the City Hall Steps from 12h45.

Thanks to support from the Royal Netherlands Embassy. Durban Arts Association now proudly presents extended Durban Arts lunch hour concerts, which see a young curtain raiser group perform at 12h45 before the main attraction.

Curtain raisers Thulas made their public debut last month on The Steps and this will be their second major public performance. Learners from Shumayela and Egagasini, the youngsters come from Umlazi Township and have been playing together for over 18 months now. Playing kwaito, they take the name of the band from their own names: Thusa Sondezi, Lucky Majoka, Sbonga Khumalo.

The concert’s main attraction will be Ithemba, an all-male gospel group headed by Philani Mkhanyawo known as Amen. The 14 young artists come from Umlazi Township and have been together for four years. Featuring singing soprano are Bheki Mngadi, Sbusiso Dlamini and Thami Mhlongo. Ithemba have performed in many concerts in Durban and won competitions such as the Masakhane Competition at the City Hall last year and Best Spiritual Group at the YMCA.

More details on the lunch-hour concerts from co-ordinator Patrick “Big- Boy” Zungu on 031 312-1236.
