LYNN HARRELL (article first published : 2001-11-1)

Cellular communications giant MTN recently announced the arrival of world-renowned musician and master cellist Lynn Harrell who will perform a three-concert national tour at the end of November.

Lynn Harrell's presence is felt throughout the musical world. A consummate soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, conductor and teacher, his work in America, Europe and Asia has placed him in the highest echelon of today's performing artists. Harrell's performances are of such intensity that music-lovers across the globe eagerly await his concert tours.

A frequent guest of many of the leading orchestras, in recent seasons Mr Harrell has performed with the Boston and Chicago symphonies, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Philadelphia Orchestra. In Europe, he has recently performed with the London Philharmonic with Kurt Masur and the Israel Philharmonic with Franz Welser-Möst. He has also toured extensively with the violinist Nigel Kennedy.

A special part of his life is the Aspen Music Festival, where he has spent his summers performing and teaching for nearly 50 years.

Lynn Harrell plays a 1720 Montagnana and a 1673 Stradivarius fondly called the “Du Pré" after its previous owner and famous cellist, the late Jacqueline du Pré who died of multiple sclerosis at the age of forty two. Du Pré is renowned throughout the world for her unique ability to produce the most expressive tones ever to emanate from the "Du Pré" cello. South African audiences who have not had the pleasure of hearing the live sounds played on this famous instrument will now have the opportunity to hear the almost unbelievable sounds of the "du Pré" played by the skilful Lynn Harrell who plays with precision and purity of tone.

The MTN Lynn Harrell Concert Tour begins in Durban on November 22 at 20h00 at the Durban City Hall when he appears with the KZN Philharmonic. Performances follow at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre on November 23 and in Pretoria on November 24 at the Old Mutual Hall, Unisa.

Tickets for the Durban City Hall performance range from R80 up to R150. Book at TicketWeb by calling 0831 400 500 or via www.ticketweb.co.za.
