MUSIC REVIVAL (article first published : 2001-10-5)

The Pietermaritzburg-based Music Revival will celebrate its birthday month of October with exceptional concerts including a free event at Wedgwood in Hilton and a performance by a major artist in the world of classical music, harpist Susanna Mildonian.

On October 7 at 15h00, there will be a free concert at Wedgwood in Hilton titled Liszt in Italy). This popular programme of music by Liszt, presented earlier in the year in Durban and at Epworth, will now be repeated in Hilton at Wedgwood. The performance is sponsored by the Dante Alighieri Society and the Italian Consulate. The selection of music by Liszt which was inspired by his travels in Italy includes pieces from Years of Pilgrimage (Annéas de pèlerinage), music inspired by the magnificent fountains at the Villa d'Este, transcriptions from Lucia de Lammermoor and the popular La Campanella.The concert will last 70 minutes and coffee will be served. Entrance is free but it is essential to book.

On October 9 at 19h30 at Wedgewood in Hilton, Queen of the Harp will feature Susanna Mildonian. "The queen of the harp", "a sensational harpist", "the successful Susanna Mildonian cannot be praised highly enough" are some of the reviews penned for this sensational performer by the press in Milan, Paris and New York. International harpist Susanna Mildonian studied in Venice and Paris and is currently Professor of Harp at the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels. A winner of the most illustrious music competitions she made her New York debut in 1972 and has since performed with many of the world’s major orchestras. The full programme in Hilton includes a showcase of exceptionally beautiful music and the most demanding virtuoso repertoire for the instrument. This is indeed a special occasion and a rare visit from a musician of the highest order. (120 mins) Tickets R60 include wine from 19h00 and coffee. Booking essential.

October 20 and 21, Wedgwood will host Music Revival’s Dinner a la Mediterranean which celebrates another successful year for this successful music group. Casual and relaxed, this celebratory evening of food and music comes from the Mediterranean lands including Spain and Italy. Robust flavours with ingredients from sun-drenched, blue sky-ed places are accompanied by an entertainment exuding the vitality and exotic sounds of the region. Christopher Duigan is the pianist and is joined by surprise guests for a fun programme. [Watch out for the Spanish dancers and Neapolitan Songs with tenor Delwynne Windell.] The programme will be repeated the following day and guests are invited to provide their own Mediterranean feast. To book a table of four or more – bring your own wine.

The celebration takes the form of a dinner at 19h00 on October 20. Tickets R100 include a three-course dinner and coffee. Bring your own wine. Tickets for the birthday lunch on October 21 at 12h30 are R40 and include coffee. Bring your own lunch, wine etc. Tables and glasses provided.
