R KELLY FOR DURBAN (article first published : 2001-09-17)

Standard Bank in association with Big Concerts, T-Musicman and Metro FM will host a concert by R Kelly, acclaimed international superstar and R&B/Hip-Hop phenomenon. Considered one of the most influential artists in the world, he will perform at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium on October 21 on his South African tour.

As sponsor of the tour, Standard Bank’s Group Sponsorships director Lyndon Barends commented "As a major sponsor of the arts, and music in particular, we are proud to announce our first association with a major international tour of R&B artist R Kelly. We have developed an extensive Joy of Jazz Festival circuit over the last number of years but have felt the need to spread the net to include other music genres - the R Kelly tour provides us the perfect opportunity to do so".

Having been nothing short of a musical phenomenon for over a decade, his masterful fusion of R&B, gospel, pop, hip-hop, and classic soul has garnered him more top-40 hits (fifteen) than any other male solo artist of the 90's. As an accomplished singer, songwriter, producer and remixer, he has written and produced for Michael Jackson, Toni Braxton, Mary J Blige and Luther Vandross, amongst others. He has also achieved Grammy awards, sold multi-platinum albums and sold-out world tours.

The R&B superstar first began to develop his talent by sitting at the piano and picking out tunes by ear. He then got the money together to buy a portable electric keyboard which would travel with him wherever he went. "Well, it started out as a joke - me and my boys just messing around performing on the street," he remembers. "Then one of the guys dropped a hat while I was playing this keyboard and people started putting money in it. That became our thing. I simply made a regular job out of it".

With the release of his fifth album, the six times platinum TP-2.COM R. Kelly further establishes himself as one of the most prolific, groundbreaking, and gifted musicians working today. All songs are written, performed, arranged, and produced by Kelly with his distinct blend of smooth talk, soaring vocals, and urban beats resonant in every track.
