FLORIAN UHLIG (article first published : 2001-09-15)

If you see nothing else this year, then see Florian Uhlig,” urges William Charlton-Perkins, publicist for the KZN Philharmonic, who has been garnering information on this brilliant young German pianist for his appearances in KZN.

Described by the prestigious publication Musical Opinion as "One of the most individual and imaginative young pianists of our time", Florian Uhlig is currently touring South Africa.

Drawing public and critical accolades throughout his swiftly escalating international career, Uhlig has been lauded as the successor to giants such as Vladimir Horowitz and Arthur Rubenstein. He was recently named “Artist of the Week” at the Munich Festival after sharing the spotlight with many of the world’s leading concert artists including the legendary Alfred Brendel.

He will perform a recital for Friends of Music at the Durban Jewish Club on Sunday September 16 at 19h45. The virtuoso programme will include works by Bennett, Schumann, Chopin, Alkan, Liszt, Romberger, Granados and Moszkowksi. Booking is through Computicket.

On Monday, he will give a public masterclass at 12:15pm, at Howard College Theatre and on Thursday he performs Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor in the KZN Philharmonic’s concert at 19h30 in the Durban City Hall.
