QUINTET SOLOISTS (article first published : 2001-09-8)

Pianist Phillip Maier, conductor of the Durban City Orchestra, is a former resident pianist of the Quintet -soloists of the German Opera - in Berlin. He will welcome his former colleagues to the shores of Africa for the first time in October as guests of the DCO. This superb prize-winning Quintet which has performed all over Europe, the Far East and Japan. is to give a series of three varied programmes in different Durban venues.

Each performer has been honoured with the title "chamber musician" from the German Opera in Berlin and all are widely recognised in their musical efforts, in both the classical and contemporary spheres. The Quintet comprises Wolfgang Dasbach (flute), Sebastian Römisch (oboe), Dieter Velte (clarinet), Christoph Maier (French horn) and Thomas Kollikowski (bassoon. T

On October 12, the Quintet will give a recital at the SABC at 19h30. Appearing with Philipp Maier, they will perform a programme of works by Beethoven, Poulenc and Dvorak. After the recital, the musicians will be available for discussion with the audience. Booking at Computicket or at the door.

On October 15 at 18h00 for 18h45, the Quintet performs A Royal Invitation at the Royal Grill of the Royal Hotel. They will again perform works by Beethoven and Poulenc with the added inclusion of Mozart compositions. Tickets R180 include a three-course meal with red and white wine and mineral water. On October 23, the Quintet performs That's Music with The Durban City Orchestra and guest singers conducted by Philipp Maier at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre at 20h00. The varied programme includes classical music, popular tunes and new arrangements of African music. A highlight of this performance will be the African premiere of a concerto for Quintet and Orchestra by the German composer Peter Joseph von Lindpaintner. Book through Computicket.
