BAROQUE 2000 (article first published : 2001-08-22)

The popular Baroque 2001 music series has a busy programme ahead for September.

The fifth concert of the 2001 Series will be presented on September 7 at 19h00 at Mariannhill Church of the Monastery to be repeated on September 9 at 11h15 at St Thomas' Church, Musgrave Road in Durban.

The programme includes Overture by Jean Baptiste Lully and Concerto Grosso by George Muffat. This will be followed by Marc Antoine Charpentier’s Te Deum featuring the Durban Chamber Choir conducted by Markus Detterbeck. Soloists will be soprano Lwazi Ncube, Mahieu van der Linde (soprano from the Drakensberg Boys Choir); counter tenor George Hassan; tenor Thembelani Luwaca and bass Richard Salmon.

These performances are presented with a special sponsorship from the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) and Alliance Française de Durban.

Tickets R40 booked in advance at Computicket. There are no reserved seats for the Mariannhill concert but reserved and numbered seats can be booked for the St Thomas’ Church.

Forthcoming concerts include the Hilton Arts Festival when Baroque 2000 will perform works by Vivaldi, Charpentier, Lully and Muffat on September 23 at 12h00 in Hilton College Chapel. The sixth concert in the series takes place on September 30 at 11h15 at St Thomas' Church – Durban and features JS Bach’s St John's Passion.

Baroque 2000 is sponsored by the National Arts Council (NAC) in association with the KZN Philharmonic (KZNPO).
