LARA JONES RECITAL (article first published : 2001-08-21)

Popular Durban pianist Lara Jones will give a piano recital for Friends of Music on August 28 at 19h45 at the SABC in Old Fort Road. Although FOM have moved their activities to the Durban Jewish Club, this venue has been placed at the disposal of the World Conference Against Racism and is therefore unavailable on that night.

One of Durban’s most popular “exports” to the international concert world is pianist Lara Jones who returns to her home town to take part in the final recital of the Friends of Music’s current mini-festival. This series of recitals pays tribute to South African musicians now based overseas and achieving excellence in their fields.

The accomplished pianist has spent the last five months in Germany which has proved to be an exciting experience. In April, she made her European debut with the Schwäbisches Jugend-Sinfonieorchester in the south of Germany under maestro Christian Pyhrr playing Chopin´s second piano concerto in E minor.

“We had three consecutive performances in three different towns,” she explains. “The first was in Marktoberdorf in the music academy, a beautiful old building where we stayed and rehearsed during our week of music-making. The second performance was in Kempton in their local theatre about an hour away from Marktoberdorf and the final concert took place in the congress hall in Augsburg, seating over a thousand people. It was a memorable experience working with such dedicated and talented young musicians and a very supportive conductor who made it a wonderful music highlight in my career. My European debut could not have been a more happy experience and I so look forward to possibly playing with them again in the future.”

Lara will be attending masterclasses with veteran Spanish concert pianist Alicia deLarrocha in October in Barcelona. “This will be an amazing opportunity for me as her playing is something very special,” she says.

Before she heads back to South Africa, Lara has a performance of Mozart´s piano concerto in A major K488 with the South African conductor Gideon Linder and his orchestra in Bavaria near the Austrian border. “It will be a great opportunity to be able to perform this concerto twice, once here in Germany and then later on September.”

The latter event Lara refers to is conductor David Tidboald’s 75th birthday concert which features the KZN Philharmonic and takes place on September 23 in the Durban City Hall. She also appears with Philipp Maier playing “Music for Four Hands” at the Hilton Festival.

For the Friends of Music recital, she will perform J S Bach’s Preludes and Fugues, Book 1 No.18 in G sharp minor and No 19 in A major as well as W A Mozart’s Sonata in A minor, K.310. The programme also features Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words, No 25 in G major Op.62 No 1; No.12 in F sharp minor Op. 30 No 6; No.23 in A minor Op.53 No 5; No.14 in C minor Op.38 No 2, and No 34 in C major Op 67 No.4. She will conclude this concert with Beethoven’s Eroica Variations in E flat major, Op 35.

Booking is at Computicket. Situated in Old Fort Road, the SABC has safe parking.
