WE GOT MAGIC TO DO (article first published : 2001-08-19)

The Family Players have been doing comedy drag mime shows as fundraisers for TAFTA for some 21 years. Now working in partnership with the Rhumbelow Shellhole in Cunningham Road (off Bartle Rd) in Umbilo, they plan to present their shows there in future. While the hall, stage and dressing room facilities need much work, the venue offers a lot of character.

Family Players’ first show at this new venue at the end of June, Tipsy Tarts Follies, was supported by some 300 people and raised in the region of R7,500 which was spent on alterations.

“Some of us have become members of the Moths and this will assist in raising funds for various charity activities that they get involved in,” explains representative Roland Stansell. “MOTHWA will do the catering and this will become a regular income for their activities. We will put a new show in every month to run on the first weekend of every month. Our shows will be varied and offer good value and an entertaining evening out in a secure environment.”

The next show takes place from September 7 to 9. Titled We Got Magic to Do, it will be presented by the South African Magical Society in cabaret format. Each magician has a different stage act and the evening offers a variety of entertainment from comedy, Mental Mind Reading and close up magic to stage illusion, serious magic and even some dancing girls!

Tickets R50 (except for Saturday which is a fundraiser at higher prices) include a meal. Contact Roland on (031) 205-7602 Or 082 499-8636 or e-mail roland@stansell.za.net Visit the South African Magical Society’s website at http://www.sams.org.za
