LAUNCH OF PRIMUSIC (article first published : 2001-08-19)

The brainchild of local musician Jason “Jagabags” Tonkin, PriMusic will focus on providing a platform for new, young and up-and-coming musicians to promote their talent as well as open recording and promotional opportunities. The focus will be on township talent and young school bands and musicians without the finance or know-how to promote themselves and gain exposure.

" We identified a gap in the music scene between music at grassroots level, garage bands and closet musicians and festivals,” says Jason Tonkin. “Accomplished artists in their own right will also be invited to perform on these stages to offer inspiration and advice."

The club’s primary stage will be at Gizmo's every Thursday evening from 20h00 onwards on the corner of Crompton Street and Union Lane in Pinetown as well as at Blu every Wednesday evening in Stamford Hill Road.

PriMusic also plans to provide venues for regular meetings, musical projects, workshops, rehearsals and performances. "We will take PriMusic to educational institutions, high schools, university campuses and so on, thereby broadening our net to attract young bands as well as offer those already involved much broader exposure," adds Jason.

Evenings will consist of a free stage where less-confident musicians will be able to perform to a non-intimidating and appreciative audience and gain encouragement, exposure and support to boost their confidence levels. A featured artist will then follow this section and the evening will culminate with the evening’s featured band.

Guest speakers will talk on a variety of issues such as equipment care, sound, song structures, drums, guitars, keyboards and any other issues which require clarification or advice.

"PriMusic will also be appealing for sponsors to come on board. Particularly to assist with the many bands, solo artists, singers and instrumentalists living in townships and squatter camps who are talented but would otherwise never get the opportunity of reaching for their dreams as musicians and improving their talents and their lives."

Interested artists can contact Jason on (031) 206-1458 or 082 260-0203.
