LINDA AND BONGANI FOR ICMF (article first published : 2001-08-19)

The Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology together with the The International Classical Music Festival (ICMF) of South Africa will host the Festival which will be the first of its kind in Southern Africa. The event will provide an opportunity for South Africa's most talented musicians to perform with world-renowned orchestras. Additionally, this platform is an opportunity for meaningful cultural exchange to demonstrate the high standards attained by national musicians within the genres of indigenous classical as well as European classical music.

The Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology is one of the major sponsors of this initiative which takes place at the State Theatre in Pretoria between August 11 and 21. The festival will celebrate different genres like the English Chamber Orchestra 's traditional classical music. African music, African classical music and traditional musical styles like Isicathamiya, Mhube and instruments such as the Amadinda, Xylophone and Ugandan Mokondere Horns.

Durban singers Linda Bukhosini and Bongani Tembe, artistic director of the KZN Philharmonic, will be part of the programme which also includes other South African artists such as soloists Zanta Hofmeyr, Abel Motsadi, Sbongile Mgoma, Wessel van Wyk, Albie van Schalkwyk, Dennis Sutton, Erna Berberwyan, Jeanne Louise Moolman, Pedro Espi-Sanchis and Susan Mouton.

Young talent will be represented, among others, by the National Youth Chamber Orchestra, Buskaid, the Soccajasco Kids, the Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, the African Youth Ensemble and the choir of the Afrikaans Hoer Seunsskool in Pretoria.
