PIAF - NO REGRETS (article first published : 2001-06-28)

The intimate Kwasuka Theatre plays host to a dramatisation of one of the greatest performers of the twentieth century: Edith Piaf. Her audiences loved her; lived with her through 20 years of triumph and disaster, passion and scandal. Piaf held nothing back - onstage or off, but gave her all, making her life the subject of her songs, living intensely, loving enormously, consuming herself.

Piaf No Regrets is her story based largely on a biography written by her half-sister, Simone Bertaut. It is an attempt to capture some of the remarkable episodes of her extraordinary life on the stage and to record the process of her development as a "chanteuse". Her songs are foremost in the facets of her life, for it is, above all, the dramatic excitement of her singing and her total commitment to her art and to life which remain memorable; with absolute conviction she sings: "Non, je ne regret rien.."

Created and directed by Pieter Scholtz, the production features Janine van Pletsen as Piaf. Other cast members include Catherine Farren, Peter Gardner and Evan Roberts. Songs include The Vagabond Children, L'Etranger, Hymne a l'Amour and others.

Piaf No Regrets runs at The Kwasuka Theatre from July 26 to August 18. Book at Computicket or at the Theatre on (031) 309-2236.
