RAINER HERSCH’S BACK! (article first published : 2001-06-3)

The inimitable quirky classical music comedy of Britain’s Rainer Hersch performed to standing ovations from serious music lovers and general public alike with his Classical Music Explained shows. He presents two shows in KZN on his nationwide tour – in the Playhouse Opera (downstairs seating only) on June 12 and at the Hilton College Theatre on June 14. Both performances at 20h00.

Hersch is all sharp and no flats. He always offers top-class humour enhanced by his obvious love and talent for classical music – an absolute must for anybody who admires intelligent and seriously-funny comedy. His show is a fast-paced, high-energy comedy with classical music as its broad theme.

Whether you know your sharps from your flats or your treble clefs from a semiquaver, Rainer Hersch does for classical music what Tiger Woods has done for golf – made it accessible, current, watchable, and not-to-be-missed. Those with musical knowledge and training will appreciate the finer details of his biting wit.

Rainer says: “When I was ten years old my parents took me to the opera. It was an experience that changed my life. I was bored out of my brains. Looking back, so was most of the audience. Now, older and wiser, I have pieced together the story of my life in music and wreak terrible revenge. Ever wondered why people give up playing musical instruments? What soloists do when they are not actually playing? What Mozart stole from ABBA? – It’s all here!”

Rainer is bought to South Africa by Des and Dawn Lindberg. Book through TicketWeb, selected credit cards on (031) 369-9444. Tickets for Hilton available through Doreen on (033) 343-0126.
