ELIJAH (article first published : 2001-06-2)

The magnificent oratorio Elijah, one of Mendelssohn's master works, will be performed on June 9 and 10 in Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

The Durban City Orchestra and the combined choruses of the Durban Symphonic Choir and PAMS (Pietermaritzburg Amateur Musician Society), present this epic musical and choral work. Soloists include Quentil Windell, John Butler, Pinkie Mtshali and Thokozane Mkhize, under the baton of Philipp Maier of the DCO.

Mendelssohn composed Elijah for the Birmingham Festival in 1846 and it was met with a rapturous reception. The The London Times said of it: "Never was there a more complete triumph - never a more thorough and speedy recognition of a great work of art."

This is an opportunity not to be missed by the KZN public - a veritable musical treat with over two hundred musicians and singers participating.

Mendelssohn's Elijah will be performed on June 9 at 19h30 in the Cathedral at Marianhill and June 10 at the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg. Tickets R30 (no discounts) available at the door an hour before the performance. More details from 082 296-2422.
