DEATH OF JUGHADEESAN DEVAR (article first published : 2008-09-16)

The South African community – and particularly lovers of Indian classical music and art - mourns the loss Mr Jughadeesan Devar who passed away this afternoon.

“Mr JR Devar was a great doyen in the cultural world,” says lifetime friend and colleague Tansen Nepaul who is an acclaimed musician and composer and senior technical producer at the SABC.

“Our father of culture, he was well-known for his role at the SABC for Indian music programming. He will always be remembered for his pioneering skills that showcased the cultural heritage of the South African Indian on what was then the English Service of the SABC.

“He had a distinguished record as an organiser of many cultural, social and religious events for the past 50 years,” Tansen Nepaul continues. “He served with distinction in many organisations including the Indian Academy of South Africa, the Natal Indian Cultural Organisation, the Clairwood Tamil Institute and many others too numerous to mention.

“He had a sound knowledge of Indian classical music, dance, art and sculpture. He certainly was one of the finest cultural icons of our time. He received many awards and accolades in his lifetime but his last was the most meaningful to him. This was an award from the youth of South Africa for his contribution to culture in South Africa.”

The funeral will take place tomorrow (September 17) from 11h00 to 15h00 at the MTSS Hall in Merebank and will proceed to the Clare Estate Crematorium.
