GITO BALOI “BEYOND” (article first published : 2008-09-11)

Beyond is a collection of ten previously-unreleased songs from the hundreds of unfinished musical works that Gito Baloi left behind when he was killed in a random act of senseless violence on April 4, 2004.

Using Gito’s bass and vocals, the music was reworked and developed in studio by producer, steelpan player and family friend, Dave Reynolds. He was joined by a group of brilliant South African musicians who had all worked closely with Gito while he was alive – Steve Newman, Paul Hanmer, Ian Herman, McCoy Mrubata, Moses Khumalo, Pedro Da Silva Pinto (of 340ml), Tlale Makhene, Tony Cox, Frank Paco, Nibs Van Der Spuy, Deepak Ram, Rui Soeiro (of 340ml), Bernice Boikanyo, Paulo Chibanga (of 340ml), Thuli Mdlalose, Eliot Short, Vusi Maseko and Graeme Sacks.

The sound of Beyond is a true reflection of Gito’s signature style, with instrumental virtuosity, vocal magic, beautiful lyrics in Portuguese, English and Shangaan and his characteristic, haunting voice, infused with the powerful collaboration of the studio guests. It delivers a remarkable global music journey to listeners that will ensure the album remains a staple in their music collections for a long time to come. Despite its complex influences, the album is mellow and instantly familiar. The tunes flow coherently, melodies inspire memories and toes start tapping with the strong feeling of Gito’s timeless presence.

The album sleeve includes a celebrity gallery with photographs by a number of well-known photographers and features images that span the 18 years of Gito’s remarkable work.
