DURBAN AT EASTER (article first published : 2004-03-16)

It’s all happening in a fun-filled action-packed Easter Season in Durban – South Africa’s playground. The holidays will be abuzz with something for everyone from The Harley Davidson International Rally and the Easter Adrenaline action on Durban’s North Beach to the Easter Sunday Spectacular at Botanic Gardens and the international Time of the Writer Festival.

The Easter Sunday Spectacular on April 11 at Botanic Gardens sees a programme packed with great music for families. The line-up includes the 60-piece Balle Brass Band from Denmark starting at 16h00 in the gardens followed at 17h30 at the lake area by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra performing a selection of contemporary and classical music. The 50-strong Claremont Community Choir will also perform with the KZNPO. Rico the Clown will be there to entertain children.

Time of The Writer, the internationally-acclaimed writers’ festival, runs from March 22 to 27. Some 20 top writers read and discuss their work nightly at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre. The festival this year has an all-African focus and includes themes relating to 10 years of democracy in South Africa. A highlighted component of the festival is the two-day conference on African Scholarship that reflects on what constitutes excellence in learning and research in Africa . Other activities include a workshop for educators; a forum on publishing issues; book-launches; live music; a schools’ short-story competition and wide-reaching school visits designed to stimulate a culture of reading and writing

"We have focused our events on action and fun this Easter season" says Chairman of Durban Africa, Paulos Ngcobo, "It’s holiday time and we expect our citizens and visitors to enjoy lots of participative action, laughter and fun and, of course, to live it up in South Africa’s playground."
