UMOJA AT THE ROYAL (article first published : 2003-11-16)

In celebration of the arrival of the Umoja musical production cast to the Playhouse, The Royal Hotel has put together a variety of packages for the public. The show runs from December 4 to January 4 2004 and the cast will be accommodated at the hotel.

The 156 year old five-star Royal Hotel has three packages available in conjunction with the show. The first costs R700 and includes accommodation for two adults for a night, as well as breakfast at the Top of the Royal, parking for the night and double tickets for Umoja. The second costs R145 per person and is a food and beverage package, including a ticket for the show and dinner at the Carvery.

The final package is a year-end party package and is only valid for December 12 and 19. For R175 per person, it is available to groups of 30 or more and is for lunch or dinner only as well as a ticket to Umoja.

Umoja tells the story of the growth of South African music, from the powerful rhythms of tribal music to the intricate steps of gumboat dancing , the foot-stomping jazz of Sophiatown, as well as gospel, kwaito and pantsula. The creators, Todd Twala and Tembi Nyandeni, joined forces with Ian van Memerty to develop a full-strength musical that features a superbly talented cast of South Africa’s brightest and most versatile young performers.

Many of the cast are from disadvantaged communities with raw talent, celebrating the songs that have become part of the rich tradition of South African music.

Performances Tuesday to Sunday at 20h00, with additional shows on Saturday and Sunday at 15h00. There will be no show on Christmas day and the show on the public holiday December 16 will be at 14h00.

For further information on the packages contact The Royal Hotel on 031 333 6000.
