AFRICAN EXPLORER (article first published : 2003-06-9)

New free Internet magazine throws spotlight on Africa.

"The magazine was set up to showcase the work of the best writers and photographers around," says editor and publisher Hilton Hamann. "Heavy-weight journalists like Chris Marais, Heather Dugmore, Julie du Toit, Bridget Hilton-Barber and Keri Harvey have come on board and their talented writing and photography has caused our readership to rocket.

“About half of all our visitors are from beyond our borders. Our aim is to provide readers and travellers, both local and international, with a resource that enhances their experience of the continent. We publish articles reflecting the flavour of an area and its people."

African Explorer also covers environmental issues and Africans making a difference or blazing new trails.

"Despite international perceptions, Africa is not a continent that is a dark hole with no hope. It has a great deal to offer," says Hamann. "In reality it is a wonderful place to visit or live and African Explorer Magazine reflects that."

The e-zine comes at a time when Africa and particularly South Africa, is in the midst of a tourism boom. “Official statistics show South Africa is the world's hottest travel destination - some six million tourists visit each year," Hamann says."We provide a global information facility for these people, so they can learn more about their destination, places to go and the people who live here. But we have also become a valuable source for locals wanting to see more of their own country.”
