GREG KING FOR KWASUKA (article first published : 2003-05-15)

Award-winning director Greg King was recently invited by Professor Pieter Scholtz and the Advisory Board of Kwasuka Theatre to move in as Artistic Director for the next 18 months, an offer Greg accepted with delight.

This tenure will provide King’s vibrant and productive theatre company KickstArt with a permanent home in which to continue creating stimulating theatre for Durban audiences. During this period he will also manage the theatre facility and endeavour to keep it bustling with a constant schedule of the kind of top-notch entertainmnent for which Kwasuka has become loved and respected.

Pieter Scholtz has decided to step back from the theatre for a time in order to place special focus on his writing. Anyone who has grown up in Durban over the past few decades was probably raised on a healthy diet of his delightful children’s plays and it is exciting to know that this tradition of Disappearing Dodo’s, Magic Paintbrushes and Tokoloshes will continue in good health.

There is much to look forward to at Kwasuka. First up is Art for Africa’s all-new production of Reza de Wet’s black comedy thriller, Run to Ground. This is the playwright’s own English translation of her renowned Afrikaans play Diepe Grond The English translation will be a world premier.

The production also boasts an exceptional cast led by Steven Stead and Belinda Harward, both recently returned from London, and special guest star, Frantz Dobrowsky. Also featured will be Patti Nokwe, currently appearing in My Voice, My Life at the Catalina Theatre. Run to Ground runs from June 6 to 28 and is designed and directed by Greg King.

Following Run to Ground is a new children’s play and Educating Rita.

The latter marks the return of director Murray McGibbon after an absence of seven years in the USA. He led the acclaimed Loft Theatre Company through NAPAC’s heyday, producing and directing a wealth of first-class drama. Educating Rita runs from July 25 to August 17.
