ART AL FRESCO (article first published : 2003-03-16)

The Midlands Meander Association and the recently-formed Zombeza Fine Arts and Crafts Advancement Group have combined efforts to offer art lovers an introduction to a host of previously unseen artistic talent in the Midlands Meander area.

The Zombeza group (“Zombeza” being isiZulu for “to meander with a purpose”) has already drawn together more than 40 fine artists and crafters living in the Meander area, proving the fact that fine art and craft are still at the core of this prime South African tourism destination.

The aim of Zombeza is to facilitate local exhibitions for these artists by arranging a number of art and craft events during the year and to arrange exhibition space on the Midlands Meander for those who have not previously exhibited their work locally.

The only criteria are that artists' work should be original, of a professional standard and have artistic merit. Zombeza will continue to search for artists and crafters, especially from disadvantaged communities, whose work warrants attention.

To launch this new intitiative, a fine art, craft and food extravanganza will be held from March 12 to 23. Titled Art Al Fresco, it will take place on the rolling lawns of the Rawdons Hotel Estate in the midst of the scenic Midlands Meander.

A gala premier evening will be held on March 21, a black tie event not to be missed by the art enthusiast, which will provide an opportunity to view an extensive exhibition of contemporary and traditional fine art and craft as well as the chance to mingle and converse with the artists.

Guests will also be able to experience the culinary talent of Midlands Meander chefs who will showcase edible masterpieces. Locally produced and stocked wine and malt will be available.

Limited tickets at R150 per person available from the Midlands Meander office include entry, food and beverages.

The Gala Evening launches the beginning of a weekend (March 22 and 23) to peruse the talent of the Zombeza Group of Fine Artists and Crafters. Entry to the daytime exhibitions is R5 per person and tickets will be available at the event on the day.
