DRAKENSBERG TAPESTRIES (article first published : 2003-02-15)

Drakensberg Tapestries is the perfect souvenir/gift for any type of tourist to our majestic Drakensberg Mountains, whether they are of the local variety or visitors to our shores. The colourful, beautifully shot photographs of the Berg, its wildlife and surrounds make one yearn for a day in the mountains. One almost wants to climb right inside these glorious, well-chosen pictures and join the visitors and residents portrayed in the various scenic images.

The book comprises of sections each accompanied by relevant and informative photographs which lead the reader like knowledgeable and well-tried Drakensberg tour guide. The content plays true justice to the mountain range’s seasons, birds and waters, informing us on exploration, fly-fishing and cave paintings (of which, interestingly enough, there are around 600 sites to be found in the ‘Berg’). David Rogers’ experience as a writer and photographer for Getaway clearly shows through in the layout and flow of the book.

A major plus to this travel book is the centre page which consists of an excellent, full color map of the mountain range, showing the various reserves, hotels, camps and places of interest. Incorporated into the map is the “Drakensberg Range” outlining the different heights of the various peaks, including Thaba Ntlenyana – the highest point in Southern Africa at 3,482m.

The book is a definite must-have for those who are thinking of visiting the “Berg” or having returned, are wanting something to remember the atmosphere and ambience of one of our natural national treasures.

Apart from David Rogers’ work with Getaway he has extensively been published in international publications such as Travel Africa and the Daily Telegraph and has published other specialist travel books (through Struik) on Africa and its locations.

There are 91 photographs within Drakensberg Tapestries not only taken by David Rogers but other exceptional South African photographers such as Shaen Adey and Wendy Dennis. The book is published by Struik and retails at R69.95. – Catherynn Dunstan
