CATALINA CLASSIC COMEDY COLLECTIVE (article first published : 2003-01-31)

The Catalina Classic Comedy Collective which comes to the Catalina Theatre next month for a short season from February 5 to 9, promises to be one of the biggest comedy events of the year featuring an all-star cast of the best of KZN comedians.

The CCCC features Alyn Adams, John van der Ruit, Ben Voss, Krijay Govender, Joe Carroll, Ivan Boniazcsuk, Keseran Pillay, Darren Simpson and Ashwin Singh.

The show is unique in that it highlights both stand up and skit comedy in s slick well-edited presentation. The best KZN comedians will collaborate on the show ensuring a variety of performance styles to entertain audiences. The show will also feature a comic take on the Cricket World Cup which commences at the end of the show’s run.

Alyn Adams is one of the country’s foremost stand-up comedians who has represented South Africa at the Montreal International Comedy Festival. Adams has featured in several Smirnoff International Comedy Roadshows and is currently also contributing a column for The Sunday Tribune. He will open the show with his intelligent brand of stand up comedy.

John van de Ruit and Ben Voss are two of the most accomplished and popular skit comedians. Fresh from their sell out season of their acclaimed satire Green Mamba, the duo will present new skits in addition to some old favourites. Darren Simpson hosts the weekend breakfast show on East Coast Radio. He is both a DJ and a comedian and is part of the Joe Parker/John Vlismas stable in Johannesburg.

The season’s producer Ashwin Singh has performed in two National Comedy Festivals and wrote and produced the acclaimed satire The Rainbow Indignation with Joe Carroll and Ivan Boniazcszuk last year. He has also enjoyed stints on East Coast Radio and SAfm with Carroll and Boniazcszk. The latter duo represent two of the most talented writers and performers around and are sure to challenge audiences with their biting satire.

The multi talented Krijay Govender is well known to KZN audiences. Actress, stand up comedian, television presenter and newspaper columnist, Ms Govender has enviable skills. She recently opened for Russell Peter to wide acclaim and will no doubt enthral audiences again. The line up is completed by stand up comedian Kaseran Pillay who has enjoyed equal success as a stand-up and an actor. His side-splitting antics have made him a crowd favourite wherever he has performed.

The Catalina Theatre in Wilson’s Wharf is the perfect setting for comedy – with its intimate design and location. It also allows patrons to take their drinks into the show. Tickets R55 (R40 students and OAPs). Tickets available from 031 305 6889.
