WANTED A LIVING WAGE (article first published : 2003-01-23)

January 2003 marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most momentous chain of events in the political history of South Africa. In 1973 “The Durban Strikes” pronounced a new era in the ongoing confrontation with the country's ruling political and economic minority.

Motivated by material need and underpinned by principles of democracy and equality, the strikes conjoined academics, workers and political leaders, among others, in a struggle that was to re-define the South African political landscape in consequent decades.

In order to commemorate this watershed moment in local and national politics, the eThekwini Local History Museums will be installing an exhibition entitled: Wanted: A Living Wage. This can be seen at the Kwa Muhle Museum, 130 Ordnance Road from January 28.
