DURBAN'S SUMMERS ARE HOT STUFF (article first published : 2002-11-20)

Durban, South Africa's playground, promises a sizzling summer season packed with action-filled fun sports, leisure, arts and entertainment activities for the whole family during December and January.

"We have planned a broad range of events for the summer season to cater for local, national and international holiday-makers' needs," says Acting CEO of Durban Africa Paulos Ngcobo. "From spectator-based sports and leisure events on central, southern and northern beaches, to participant-based arts and culture events in KwaMashu - there is something for everyone from every walk of life to enjoy."

The Vodacom Durban Summer Festival kicks off the Summer Campaign on Durban's popular North Beach from December 12 to 22. The festival is a world-class outdoor extravaganza of ocean and beach sporting events with beach parties, live concerts and celebrity appearances as well as a variety of interactive events.

The festive season starts off at Gateway Theatre of Shopping with Santa Claus making a guest appearance on a Harley Davidson in the Palm Boulevard. Also planned is the appearance of character cat Garfield on December 10 and 11 and Cape Town's famed Zip Zap Circus from December 6 to 11.

The main beaches up and down the KZN coast have major entertainment programmes and sporting events in place to occupy all members of the family.

The Durban Jazz Festival takes place on December 15 and 16 with the Business Day/BASA award-winning Sprite Soul Comedy Tour being held at the Playhouse on December 14 at 20h00. This is South Africa's longest running comedy tour which showcases local and international stand-up comedians such as Mark Curry (hit TV show Hangin with Mr Cooper), the popular John Vlismas, Cory "Zooman" Miller (Def Comedy Jam in the US) and South Africa's only Muslim comedian and medical doctor, Riaad Moosa.

The Isigcawu Festival is a community arts festival of KwaMashu from December 16 to January 1. It will showcase the best of local talent in a variety of musical styles such as gospel, isicathamiya, maskandi, amahubo and Afro Jazz. Dance styles include traditional Zulu dance, gumboots, pantsula, contemporary, etc. There will also be an art exhibition of local crafts and theatre work about family and social life as well as a community market in KwaMashu Park.
