TRANSAFRICA EXPRESS (article first published : 2002-11-17)

The consortium of guy Wood (Beanbag Bohemia); Neil Comfort (Rainbow Jazz Restaurant) and Alex Peltz (barGO) has been successful in being awarded the tender for the restaurant and bar at the BAT Centre.

“There’s lots to do before the restaurant will be fully functional with anticipated date being in the first week of December,” says Neil Comfort. “In the meantime we will be doing much needed repairs and renovations. We are also planning a bumper festive season of events, details of which will be released as soon as we have confirmed the line-up.”

In the meantime, patrons are invited to check out the temporary menu at TransAfrica Express which is available in the bar and on the Deck. A little taste of the excellent food to come, served in one of the finest settings in Durban right on the harbours edge.

On November 17 between 15h00 and 17h00, Warwick Lobban will perform his eclectic fusion of African Jazz, rock and folk music. Warwick performs on guitar and vocals and will be joined by Thandi Mseleku on backing vocals with her group Fasimba completing the musical backing. Entrance is free. For those unfamiliar with the area, the BAT Centre is situated at 45 Maritime Place in the Small Craft Harbour which is approached via the Point Yacht Club off the Esplanade. BAT also has a variety of shops from the elegant Bayside Gallery to the glorious area of local craft in the BAT Shop. Wander into the Visual Arts studio and you’ll find talented artists working in various mediums.

More details from Guy Wood (083 799 6019); Alex Peltz (082 905 4388) or Neil Comfort (083 463 8044) as it will be a while before Telkom instals a landline for the restaurant

Any bands musicians wishing to perform over the festive season are requested to forward their biography to Neil at bandwagon@artslink.co.za The music program will feature emerging and established Durban acts on the BAT Deck, established acts on the stage in the restaurant (stage should be open by December 13). Consideration will be given to major productions in the BAT Hall for acts who have recorded and achieved successful airplay on local or national radio stations.
