GATEWAY PHILHARMONIC (article first published : 2002-11-17)

The Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra is a special partnership between Gateway and the Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra, previously the Durban City Orchestra. This came about when Gateway Theatre of Shopping decided to make the orchestra one of their prime community projects.

When the national arts community in South Africa found itself in dire straits around the late 1990s, many symphony orchestras had to close down, leaving many musicians unemployed. This included previously disadvantaged musicians from all race groups who have found a passion for the classics.

Gateway Theatre of Shopping made a decision to invest in the community by targeting a classical art form such as a company orchestra. Negotiations with the Durban City Orchestra led to the birth of the "Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra". This partnership allows the orchestra to perform anywhere under the "Gateway Philharmonic Orchestra" banner.

Every third Sunday of the month the Palm Court (weather permitting, of course) is filled with live music from this 52-member orchestra which comprises musicians from all ethnic groups and ages, ranging from 15 to 82.

This project received international recognition earlier this year, by being nominated a finalist in the community project category of the International Council of Shopping Centre’s marketing awards - the Maxi Awards.

Book a table at one of the Palm Court restaurants or lounge around the lily pond. Extra seating is available and the concert is free. In case of rain the concert will take place in the Ster Kinekor foyer facing the food court.
