DEATH OF PHUMELELO MAWENI (article first published : 2002-08-26)

Durban Africa’s CEO, Phumelelo Maweni died in Durban today (Monday, August 26) after a long illness.

Paulos Ngcobo, Durban Africa’s Chairman of the Board announced the death of Maweni this afternoon at the age of 39.

"It is with deep regret that we make this announcement,” he said. “Maweni was a valuable member of Durban’s marketing team and a good friend. He was appointed as CEO in February last year and played an integral role in ensuring that Durban’s local, national and international profile was maintained and developed. He headed the Durban’s marketing organisation during a crucial time that saw major conferences and events coming to the City."

Born in East London, Phumelelo Maweni studied a BA Honours in Communication Science at Fort Hare University and received a Marketing Certificate from Wits Business School. He began his marketing career as a marketing trainee at Wilson-Rowntree in 1986 and soon moved through the ranks to Product Manager. Following that he worked with Rainbow Farms as Senior Brand Manager and then with Eskom as Strategic Intelligence Manager. He was appointed to CEO of Durban Africa in February 2001.

Phumelelo Maweni is survived by his wife Phumi and his three children.
