ITAFA AMALINDE HERITAGE TRUST (article first published : 2002-08-26)

The Architectural Heritage Committee offers an invitation to celebrate Heritage Month in September 2002 with a series of illustrated talks and tours on The Many Architectural Faces of Durban.

Architect Richard Dobson, will talk on the Warwick Junction Urban Renewal Project on September 4 at 17h30 for 18h00 at 160 Bulwer Road. This fascinating area, which has an annual turnover of about R1 billion within the informal economy, is fast becoming “the other” Gateway to Durban. Over 300,000 train, taxi and pedestrian commuters pass through this area every day. Warwick Junction offers a vibrant bustling mix of religious, commercial and residential functions including the mealie cookers, pinafore sellers, Muthi market, and a host of others. (Tickets R15). Following his talk, Richard Dobson will conduct an accompanied walk through the Warwick Junction area on September 8, leaving 160 Bulwer Road at 09h30 for 10h00. Tickets R25.

Protekon architect Dave Stromberg will talk on the changes envisaged for the Harbour and Point, and discuss the impact of these changes on the built heritage. The talk will take place on September 11 at 17h30 for 18h00 at 160 Bulwer Road. (Tickets R15) On September 15, Dave Stromberg will conduct a tour of the Harbour area, looking at the Ocean Terminal conversion to offices, and other buildings and places of interest. The tour leaves 160 Bulwer Road at 09h30 for 10h00. (Tickets R25)

Local architect Dennis Claude will talk on Indo/African Art Deco in Durban on September 18 at 17h30 for 18h00 at 160 Bulwer Road. (Tickets R15 ) He will conduct a walk through the Carlisle and Grey Street precinct looking at its Art Deco buildings on September 22 leaving 160 Bulwer Road at 09h30 for 10h00 (Tickets R25)
