ACT: ART COLLECTORS AUCTION (article first published : 2002-06-27)

The Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg is hosting the second ACT: Art Collectors Auction of the Year, on June 30 at 18h00.

South African artists, in partnership with the Arts and Culture Trust, help to increase the resources available to the visual arts of South Africa. An important event in the arts calendar, this auction marks the development of an ongoing quest to fund the arts. Top South African artists have generously donated a range of fine art works to the Arts and Culture Trust (ACT) to raise funds.

All revenues generated by the auction will be channeled back to the visual arts. This special event will be opened by the Siyawela Brass Band from Alexandra and the works will be auctioned by Michael Fridjhon, Bongi Dhlomo-Mautloa and Linda Givon of the Goodman Gallery.

Linda Givon sees the auction as an opportunity for artists and collectors to make a difference to the local art scene. Over the years she has played a pivotal role in promoting South African art locally and internationally and she understands the educational and funding needs of artists. “If we deny our culture we deny our lives and our heritage. We have to source funds to stay alive,” she states. In cooperation with Andries Oliphant, the chairperson of ACT, she initiated this development with the first auction in 1997. This second auction is expected to be part of a series.

Collectors, lovers of art and the public interested in contributing to this event are all invited to the auction to collect fine works by South Africa’s best artists – ”best” in that they have open-heartedly donated their works to a meaningful cause.

The Goodman Gallery will not charge commission and hosts the auction free of charge. More information from www.goodman-gallery.com or www@artsculturetrust.co.za or contact Mads on 011 788-1113 or Wendeen on 011 833-3611.
