NEW CONCEPT AT LEGENDS (article first published : 2002-06-12)

“Adventure Food” to match the modern trend of adventure lifestyles and 4x4 trails in high-tech recreation vehicles has arrived on the Berea.

The owner of Legends restaurant Bill Budd, who pioneered the “Terrace Lifestyle” where the trendy set could enjoy lazy lunches, alfresco dinners and mellow late-nights on the terrace, has pioneered yet another culinary concept to keep pace with the current accent on lifestyle.

“The idea of a lifestyle food experience has been germinating for a while,” says Budd. “We started some time ago with the introduction of Fat Tuesdays with Rapp jumping off the building to get people involved in a whole new experience. Going to a restaurant should do more than just titillate the pallet, it should be an experience that enhances your whole lifestyle and lifts you to another plane of awareness.”

He has great plans to develop African Fusion, exciting food that blends the exotic flavours of Africa with international cuisine. “Durban is the real gateway to Africa,” says Budd “and we want to give locals and international tourists a foretaste of the adventure that is Africa.”

With Terrace Lifestyle becoming so popular with smokers, to combat the Winter chill Legends is launching a range of soups, utilizing mostly indigenous products and if clients have forgotten their jackets, they can “rent-a-blanket” and wrap up in a cozy Zulu Blanket Poncho.

“We went through a bit of a dip after the death of my brother Myles, but Legends is back on track and it is time to move on and celebrate the wonderful lifestyle that our country offers, with its fusion of cultures, tastes and style,” says Bill.

We are also developing Afrofusion trails, in conjunction with KZN Tourism in order to explore KwaZulu-Natal, stopping off at selected spots of cultural interest and restaurants where the cuisine will reflect the many and varied cultural influences of our local fare – a veritable feast for body, mind and spirit.
