ECR IN SINGAPORE (article first published : 2002-05-21)

East Coast Radio went international with its recent tour to Singapore. The breakfast team Naveen Singh and Daryl Ilbury broadcast live daily and managed to take in loads of sights of the city. The team were treated to first class luxury but still managed to find out the most cost effective ways for South Africans to spend their money both on shopping and meals.

“One cannot go to Sunny Singapore without taking a bumboat ride down the Singapore River, says Alice Zejglic, Chief of The Vibe at ECR. “There you get to enjoy the breeze as you cruise leisurely down the scenic historic river, passing restored shop- houses and godowns that stand in start contrast to the imposing modern skyscrapers. One gets to catch a glimpse of the city's landmark the Merlion, the icon of Singapore's tourism industry.

“After that, you just have to chill out over a Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel, the only place one can litter. The city is exceptionally clean and the fines for littering are in the region of $1000 so it’s really not worth throwing anything on the ground.

“If you love food like we do at East Coast Radio, you are in heaven and there are so many smells, tastes, flavours I cannot even begin to describe them all. But the street markets are the best. Lau Pat Sat is Singapore's favourite hawker centre where you can enjoy all the best of local fare ie prawns that take three bites to finish. Other great food markets fall in Little India and Arab Street as well as in China Town.

“If you are into shopping, wheeling and dealing is the norm in some shopping areas, but please don't try it in the Malls. We found the markets in Little India and ChinaTown to be the best for our Rand.

“Our final night in the city was spent at Igors, a horror themed restaurant - it was the best supper club I had ever been to. The theme carried throughout the venue, with a long walk through the chamber of horrors. I think the monster who grabbed me was more frightened when I responded with aggression by hitting the poor man on the arm.”

Watch this space for the next interesting destination that East Coast Radio will visit.
