RED EYE @RT (article first published : 2002-02-23)

After a much needed and well-earned break, Red Eye @rt will kick off again at the Durban Art Gallery on March 1. Somewhat different to previous years, it was decided that the Red Eye would take place on a quarterly basis from the beginning of 2002 to allow more time in between events for planning and preparation.

The organisers promise that this month's event will be “a truly chilled-out, laid-back affair with the usual dash of contemporary culture”. Dance enthusiasts will appreciate not one, but two performances, both completely different. The first is a collaboration between French artist Anne de Beaufort and the talented Ntombi Gasa of Siwela Sonke fame who will present a piece incorporating movement and the visual art of painting. The cheerful, energetic youngsters of the Uyaba Dance company will also present their latest item - an ingenious blend of s'pantsula, kwaito, gumboot and traditional Zulu dancing.

Music for the evening will feature Jazz duo George Mari and Australian Gerald Sloane as well as the foot-tapping rhythms of the Interitmo Drummers. Other highlights include Shroud, an evocative performance by Vaughn Sadie and a fashion showcase featuring New York Fashion Week finalist, Bonga Bhengu.

Red Eye Art will also play host to the exhibitions currently on display at the gallery. The ever-popular annual KwaZulu-Natal Schools Art Exhibition 2002 with its broad selection of work from schools around the province, together with the incredible Handspring Puppet installation entitled Episodes will definitely make for some worthwhile viewing. The gallery is also currently in the process of re-hanging its large, circular gallery with a selection of works from its very impressive collection; some of which have never been displayed before.

Red Eye @rt takes place on March 1 at the Durban Art Gallery, 2nd floor, City Hall, Smith Street, from 18h00 to 20h00. Entrance R15 and a cash bar is available.
