BOTANIC GARDENS ANNIVERSARY (article first published : 2002-01-5)

The Durban Botanic Gardens recently celebrated the 150th anniversary of its establishment on the Berea 1851. Today the Gardens are managed by the Parks Department of ethekwini Municipality with support from the Durban Botanic Gardens Trust and the Friends of the Durban Botanic Gardens. A new Mission for the Gardens has recently been adopted which will see the Gardens concentrating on local indigenous vegetation and outreach programmes to KZN schools.

The Gardens have been reduced from the original 50 acres to about 36 acres.

“It is our goal to increase the Gardens to their original size if at all possible and some land to the east of the present boundary was recently acquired,” says curator Chris Dalzell. “The Visitors Centre was built hereon and we hope to develop demonstration gardens on further land which the Gardens would like to acquire to grow the economic and medicinal plants of our region.”

The Gardens are the oldest Botanic Gardens in Africa and over the next six months there will be many events hosted by the Friends of the Durban Botanic Gardens to celebrate its 150th anniversary.
