CELEBRITY COOKBOOK (article first published : 2001-11-1)

In an innovative move, Grahamstown Hospice has paved the way for a national launch of a Celebrity Cookbook to assist Hospices around the country raise much needed funds. The amusing recipe book is a collection of over 80 delicious culinary adventures by 40 well-known South African entertainers, politicians, writers, journalists and sports stars and includes caricatures of contributors by renowned Cape Town illustrator, Tony Grogan.

Chris Wright, chairman of the Trustees of Grahamstown Hospice and editor of the book, originally initiated the idea as a local fundraiser. But with the effort of fundraiser Angela Hibbert and the inspired assistance of Mark Shelton, owner of the Grahamstown Spar, they developed a national scheme to assist Hospices around the country.

The Spar Group has agreed to underwrite the printing costs of 20,000 books which will be distributed to 700 Spar outlets around the country. Hospice will generate R500,000 nationally from the project once all the books are sold.

Celebrities were each asked to provide a favourite recipe together with any anecdote that might be associated with it. The result is an entertaining and whimsical recipe book filled with delicious recipes and guaranteed conversation pieces.

Megastar and charismatic chef, Evita Bezuidenhout sent favourite recipes of some of the luminaries for whom she has been privileged to cook for over the years including a “milk tart” from Margaret Thatcher and “pickled fish” from Mikhale Gorbachov. Denis Beckett has written on the joys of breakfast and Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi sent a recipe for a traditional Zulu dish.

There are recipes for dishes as diverse as chicken saté, haddock and orange soup, Christmas pudding, apple pie, biltong, mushroom pancakes and health bread. Other contributors include Cyril Rampahosa, Desmond Tutu, Gary Player, Tony Leon, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Guy Willoughby, and John Perlman.

The Celebrity Cookbook will be available in Spar stores nationwide at the end of October and will make ideal Christmas presents while assisting Hospice to continue to provide their highly valued free home-based care for the terminally ill and bereaved.
