DIABETES – EAT & ENJOY (article first published : 2001-09-9)

Published by Struik New Holland, the third edition of Diabetes: Eat & Enjoy is a fully revised and updated publication. It offers a variety of recipes from soups, snacks, stir-fries and risottos to desserts and cakes.

Also featured is concise information on managing diabetes through diet, an explanation of food labelling and advice on managing disorders and special needs. There are tips for modifying recipes, detailed food value lists and a summary of nutritional data for each recipe. Vegetarian recipes are also included.

Originally published in Australia in 1990 and now in its tenth year, Diabetes: Eat & Enjoy is written by specialist dieticians and expert cooks with many years of experience in working with people with diabetes. Contributors include Christina Roberts, a consultant dietician and director of Melbourne Dietetic Centre; Jennifer McDonald who is manager of nutrition and dietetics at St George’s Health Service in Melbourne, and Margaret Cox who co-authored the Healthy Heart Cookbook and has been involved in both research and clinical work with people with diabetes for many years.

Designer for this publication is Nanette Backhouse and stylist is Vicky Liley. Ben Dearnley’s photography makes the dishes look tempting and appetising.

Not having seen the earlier editions of this book, it is impossible for me to comment on the extent to which this edition is an improvement on the earlier editions or not. However, as a recently diagnosed diabetic it is comforting to know that this recipe book has been endorsed by the South African Diabetes Association. So, apart from the many recipes contained in the book, there is also some concise and simply-put information about diabetes in general and diet in particular.

The recipes – of which there is a wonderful array – are clear and simple to follow and although they are a little too exotic for my liking, this book should be invaluable to both diabetics and the health conscious alike.

Nevertheless, I live in the hope of finding a recipe book filled with quick recipes suitable for a bachelor with Spartan tastes and who is always pressed for time!
