EGYPTIAN TUTS (article first published : 2001-09-4)

Owner, Paul Clark, long fascinated with things Egyptian, is realising his dream with the recent opening of Tuts Restaurant and Bar at Virginia Circle, Durban North. Tuts promises to be a fun, atmosphere-filled restaurant with all the intrigue of Egyptian décor and a couple of middle-eastern dishes. For the rest of the menu, it’s fresh seafood and a taste of another part of Africa. Tourists and locals alike will have the opportunity of tasting exotic South African cuisine, namely game, including crocodile and ostrich.

A successful restaurant and pub-owner in Britain until he emigrated to South Africa last year, Paul Clark was attracted to invest in Durban because of the city’s relaxed atmosphere and way of conducting business. “It’s a fun place with no attitude and that’s my motto for the restaurant”, he says.

Tuts will be open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. The décor has been designed by Ronell Merrick and Associates. Curtain-draped booths will offer privacy for diners in certain areas of the restaurant. There is a dedicated separate smoking section. The bar will offer special vintage wines and wide variety of draught beer. Prices are reasonable, ranging from R30 to R50 for main courses.

Paul plans to give as much back to the community as possible by means of staging on-going charity events on the Virginia Circle grass verge opposite the restaurant.
