NEW LOOK FOR SAFM (article first published : 2001-07-24)

From August 5, Sunday mornings will sound a little different on SAfm. After the news at 10h00, Jeremy Maggs will start immediately with Media@SAfm. One of SAfm’s most popular features Letter from America with Alistaire Cooke can now be heard at 12h00.

“We always thought Letter from America sat uncomfortably at the beginning of Media@SAfm and deserved a slot of its, own,” says SAfm’s marketing manager Tony Lankester. “Certainly, we’ve had a strong appeal from listeners to put it later in the day to accommodate those who attend morning church services and miss the broadcast.”

Alistaire Cooke is a legend in the world of broadcasting and Letter from America is officially the world’s longest running radio programme. SAfm hopes to keep it on the air for many years to come,” adds Tony Lankester.

Alistaire Cooke will be followed at 12h15 by a new programme Zoom, presented by Will Bernard. It is a 15-minute feature series in documentary style, presenting everyday events in ways we are not used to hearing them.

“The programme will feature on-location interviews with a diverse range of guests,” says Will Bernard, “covering broad areas of interest … from abseiling to potato chip making.”

According to Tony Lankester, the short documentary format is one that has been largely ignored in the past and Zoom will give listeners the opportunity ”to visit new places”.
