PHUMELELO MAWENI HEADS DURBAN AFRICA (article first published : 2001-03-21)

Durban Africa’s new CEO Phumelelo Maweni is a lover of Mozart and believes that the arts are part and parcel of the tourism package of any city and most critical to its profile. He is committed to the promotion of the multi-ethnicity of the inner city and advocates stronger links between business and the arts in terms of sponsorship.

Phumelelo Maweni comes from a strong marketing background, has a degree in communication science, worked with the multinational FMCG company and has gained extensive marketing experience both in South Africa and the UK. Through his top marketing position at Eskom, he has established strong working relationships with Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Richards Bay municipalities and local tourism associations.

Commenting on his perception that the Durban media is more supportive to its city than is the case in Gauteng, Phumelelo Maweni “earnestly believes that newspapers, magazines, radio and TV play a vital role in forming and shaping public perceptions. It tells me that when the weight of media reporting about Durban is positive, it is in fact reflecting the mood of the people. This is good as we will never really be successful in convincing outsiders about the attributes of our city if we don't believe them ourselves.”

“Although I am acutely aware of the need to get other South Africans, international tourists and conventions into our city,” he adds, “I believe that the people of Durban are a vital component of the product we are marketing.”
