THE INNER EAR (article first published : 2001-03-19)

SAfm’s documentary programme The Inner Ear is broadcast on Wednesday evenings at 20h00 and repeated the following Sunday morning at 09h30.

In February this year, the record company Gallo Africa turned 75 years old. Originally started as a one-man business by engineering student Eric Gallo, it has grown into a flourishing music world with a stable of great artists, including international stars Lucky Dube, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens and Coleske.

Michelle Constant will present Diamonds on the Soles of their Feet on March 21 as she follows the history of some of South Africa’s music greats and the company that made it all possible (rebroadcast March 25 at 09h30).

Peter James-Smith will be in the studio on March 28 to present The Inner Ear with a documentary titled Teaching to Learn which will deal with remedial education for children with special needs.

Some children are unable to assimilate information in the same way as most children. Peter James-Smith will investigate the means by which remedial teaching taps into each child’s information gathering system, enabling the child to process information in such a way that it becomes capable of responding to the mainstream education system. Teaching to Learn will explore the response of parents, teachers and Government to the child with special needs, as well as the prejudice and ignorance that surrounds remedial education. (Rebroadcast April 1 at 09h30).
